Disegno – The Gold Bar on Murray Street!

Beautiful, gold, precious, custom designed and hand crafted in Canada. The Ottawa region is graced with the artistry, talents and passions of gemologist and accredited jewelery professional and designer Pamela Coulston, owner of Disegno.

Newly established, and now in full operation, on the Byward Market’s Murray Street, Disegno’s new neighborhood, one of the capital’s more elegant market streets, is home to select and popular high end celebrity chef’s restaurants and designers. Just a few streets away, from the higher strung activity of the local market pubs and clubs, this street is a perfect new home.

The quality and attention to custom jewelery design is what sets Pamela Coulsten’s Disegno apart in the jewelery world. This accounts for a significantly larger percentage of her work. In these days when there is much in the news about the value of gold, and not only monetarily. Disegno offers much sought after services like the redesign of personal and sentimental pieces with unmatched attention and sensitivity. In a consumer and, all too often, crass retail world of cash for gold hawkers, snake oil sales and kiosk operators, this is an oasis of integrity and full value service in artistry. You get what you get when you take your chances.

Pamela is friendly and approachable and her shop is bright and sparkles. She has been in this business since the early 1990s shortly after finishing her training in gemology and jewelery design in California. If you find yourself strolling along Murray Street, drop in and say hello and have a look at the wonderfully designed pieces. Disegno is host to special event nights and maintains and an active list of clients is maintained by Pamela. She keeps them all well notified of new work and activities.

Pamela will gladly explain how gold value is determined. She is happy to share information about market rates, karatage, the price per gram and how gold is tested. She uses a Tri-Electric GT4000 gold platinum tester for precision testing that meets the industry standard. No damage is sustained by your jewelery even as they are tested for evidence of gold plating. Most gold buyers shy away from buying your gems because they do not have expertise in that area. With Disegno you do not run into this issue as Pamela’s training means she can apply her expertise in this area for you. She is happy to incorporate your gems into new designs or return them to you, as per your wishes.

The Gold Bar program is new and exclusive to Disegno. As part of it you are encouraged to think twice about selling your old gold as the television hucksters do their best to entice you to do and go on about. Pamela encourages you to consider redesigning your old gold. A fun play on words, it addresses the idea of a high end benchmark and actual gold bars. You can have out-dated styles converted into new jewelery, get 100% value for your gold (a very attractive deal considering the cash-for-gold schemes pay low rates), and you can have even the smallest of your gems redesigned. Key to The Gold Bar program is the preservation of, and sensitivity to, sentimental value. It lives on in your newly redesigned jewelery. You can’t beat these facts: it is environmentally friendly to reuse gold and the work is done locally by professionally trained designer Pamela Coulston. She is more than happy to discuss this exclusive program with you. More information is available about dealing with your gold pieces by contacting her at the store or when you visit. She even offers the opportunity to trade in old gold for newer pieces at attractive rates of trade.

Jewelery establishments can be found in many places and at varying levels of sophistication but I believe that for hospitality and friendliness, you will be hard pressed to find better treatment and satisfaction anywhere else. Pamela believes jewelery is not only a pleasure for the eyes but that it should also tantalize the sense of touch. Substance goes hand in hand with beauty in the exclusively crafted lines. Her 18k gold and silver sterling jewelery is defined by the quantity of gold and sterling. The rings are solid and not hollow and their mass is true evidence of that. In addition, only the finest quality, ethical, Canadian gemstones are used.

I can attest to all of this having fallen in love with so many of the pieces. I have held them and drooled shamelessly over many of them in the Murray Street shop and at her booth at a recent One of a Kind show. Pamela goes above and beyond to ensure that her clients are happy with their purchases from tiny works of sterling to the most substantial pendants and rings. She also wants everyone to know she is there to help you with that special purchase for your special someone (or ‘ones’). In that capacity she refers to herself as ‘giftologist’. Now that’s some nifty expertise.
My favorite pieces are in the Canada Canada line – one of the three specialty lines including Fine Lines and Perpetual Emotion. In Canada, you will find sculpted and detailed animal and iconic Canadian pieces in sterling silver and 14k and 18k gold like Inukshuks, polar bears, seals, kayaks and miniature paddles, maple leaves and fleur de lys to name but a few.

You can see much more of these favorites of mine and her other fine creations at The Gold Bar on Murray Street. The shop is called Disegno:   100 Murray Street, Ottawa, Ontario, K1N0A1, Tel: 613.482.1614

Take a stroll out of the regular market fray and take a veritable Murray Street promenade to Disegno, drop in and say hello to Pamela. Tell her I sent you (always wanted to say that – along with ‘follow that cab!’), enjoy the pieces, learn a little about the craft and maybe find that special something, a ring or pendant for yourself or that special someone. Or better yet – encourage that special someone to get a little something for you while they’re there too? You never know!
