A Homemade Brightening Mask Made from Kitchen Ingredients You Already Have

As we slowly shift from Ottawa’s chilly winters to spring sun, it’s time to take your skin out of hibernation and into fresh rejuvenation. The dry and cold weather can take its toll over the winter months, but you can get your skin in ship shape in time for the new season’s rising temperatures. Renew your skin for that springtime glow with this quick and natural turmeric mask. Easy and affordable, it’s made from ingredients that you might even already have in your kitchen.

Need some context?

Turmeric

Turmeric is a spice that comes from the roots of India. It has been used not only in cooking, but for multiple health benefits for thousands of years. It’s also totally trending right now (think golden milk). Curcumin, the main ingredient in turmeric, has very strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties which can create lustering skin. It is a tradition for Indian brides to use a turmeric mask before their wedding to cleanse their bodies for a healthy glow. With consistency, turmeric can help heal acne, dry skin, psoriasis and eczema, as well as even out skin tone.

Gram Flour

Gram flour absorbs excess oil and sebum from your skin. Its antibacterial properties help get rid of bacteria that cause pimples.

Honey

Honey is beneficial for delicate skin, breaks down dead skin cells and helps brighten your skin tone. It’s also incredibly moisturizing and smells fantastic.

Rosewater is a Magical Beauty Potion

Rose water also has anti-inflammatory properties that can help reduce the redness, acne and eczema. The aroma of roses can also be a powerful mood enhancer and it serves as a natural skin toner.

Plain Yogurt

Yogurt helps moisturize the skin barrier and contains Zinc which has anti-inflammatory properties. Lactic acid, a great exfoliant/skin moisturizer/anti-aging agent, is one of the main ingredients in yogurt. It’s a multitasking win.

TURMERIC MASK

Warning! Turmeric stains fabric and furniture so make sure you take appropriate measures when applying this mask. As with any skin products, test a dab on your hand checking for any allergic reactions before using.

Turmeric’s golden colours may leave a slight tint on your face, but don’t worry - it’s not permanent and can easily be taken off with more washes. Make sure to apply the mask in a thin layer as the more you use, the more chances of staining.

What You’ll Need

  • 1 Teaspoon of Turmeric
  • 2 Tablespoons of Gram Flour (Besan, Chickpea Flour)
  • A few drops of Honey
  • Teaspoon of Rosewater
  • 3 Tablespoons of Plain Yogurt

Directions

Mix all ingredients in a bowl and apply with a clean brush or clean hands. Let the mask sit for 15-20 minutes and you will feel it harden. Rinse off with lukewarm water. Happy glowing!
