A Kiss from Spain

This week’s selection(s) were supposed to be all about New Zealand. You see, last week the Kiwis finished off their tour around Canada, pouring their great Sauvignon Blancs, Pinot Noirs and a handful of other varieties they do well with (including Viognier and Pinot Gris). It’s safe to say that New Zealand wine is perfect for summertime enjoyment. But it’s been cool (weather-wise) in most of Ontario for the better part of the last week and so that seems to have put my idea for refreshing summer-seeming juice on hold for a week, and allows me to tell you about a really good bargain I found from Spain.

This week I’m in Windsor for the All-Canadian Wine Championships (winners announced by end of May) and a fellow writer brought a bottle of wine to my room and said he would like to get my opinion on this particular wine he held in his hand (he had just purchased it and wanted a second opinion): Grandes Vinos y Vinedos Beso de Vino Seleccion 2011 – a blend of Syrah and Garnacha from the region of Cariñena in Spain ($9.95 - #231787). Now... I really love Spanish wines. I find them to be serious without being pretentious, really tasty and ultimately a good value for what you get in the bottle. I had no idea on the price of the Beso when I was asked to taste it, poured it in my glass or took my first sip… in fact, price never came into it.  Though I did look at the label with its crudely drawn cartoon bull standing on its “hind” legs, one hoof on its “hip” seeming to kiss a glass of wine that it is tipping into its mouth and thought this can’t be very serious (read: or very good) wine, I am happy to report I was wrong: lovely plum and cherry notes with hints of raspberry and touched with simple yet sweet spices… this makes for a great sipper for BBQ season. Which just goes to prove the old adage: “You can't judge a bull by its udder”… or is that a wine by its label? Maybe I’ve got this all mixed up – but whatever the old saying, this wine is udderly delicious and worth your investing a ten spot on.  And that’s no bull (***½+).

I’ll see you next week when we will be talking New Zealand wines in the LCBO.
