In the game of baseball, it’s easy to see when there’s a lack of communication on the field. Whether it’s a wrong pitch, jumbled infield pass or a missed fly ball by two outfielders, communication can make or break the game.
Both on and off the playing field, communication is a critical life skill.
Through her new children’s book, Monkeys and Crocodiles Play Baseball, author and fun-loving mom Angel Krishna encourages communication development through relatable jungle friends playing America’s favourite pastime.
Ottawa Life chatted with Krishna to talk about her new book, why communication is a great skill for children to have and the importance of using your imagination.
What inspired you to write Monkeys and Crocodiles Play Baseball?
I thought if I could put a message using animals and a fun atmosphere, like the jungle in a fun storybook, kids would really enjoy and learn that that communication is very important on a daily basis. You really don’t know what others are feeling unless you communicate, and vise-versa.
Why is communication an important lesson for children to learn?
Communication is a KEY element in any relationship! Friendship, family and parents included. Children need to know that communication is a great skill and by using communication you gain knowledge. Whether that knowledge is good or bad, it will get you to where you need to be!
With technology being introduced early into children’s lives, how do you recommend parents encourage children to use their imagination?
Imagination is a BIG DEAL that a lot of people take for granted and don’t realize how amazing and fun it is. Kids should be encouraged on a daily basis to use their imaginations. Any time a parent has time, for example in the car: play “The imagination game.” Come up with a topic and have them imagine a new world, game, or life form. I always have words on a paper in a bag and have them pick one and imagine it out-loud. It’s pretty fun and it also works.
Do you have any plans for a second book?
My second book is “The Gu-Glee-Goos of Christmas.” The Gu-Glee-Goos come from a land of helping hands. They spin and sparkle into place and do it with style and grace.
