We’ll give you a second to scroll back up and stare at the adorableness of these two before we properly introduce them.

Please meet this week’s OLM Pet(s) of the Week: Hakuna and Matata! These two Pomeranians are a bonded pair and are available for adoption together through Sit with Me. Both came into the rescue overweight, and through lots of hard work, have managed to trim down and live a much healthier lifestyle!

Hakuna (or simply Kuna for short) is the fluffier of the pair. This social butterfly adores attention and will often go out of her way to make sure she gets some! She loves to snuggle and she’ll put her paw on your lap when she wants to be pet. Matata is Kuna’s 11-year-young sidekick who stops traffic wherever he goes. He’s got an awesome haircut and knows how to work it! Matata is an older dog who is young at heart and loves to play with his rambunctious 1-year-old foster brother and it not afraid to tell off bigger dogs when they get too much.

Both LOVE to take walks! Kuna especially will do excited spins and give little ‘woowoo’s and bug you to hurry up as you get set to go out! While Matata loves his walks as well, what really gets him dancing is dinner! He always greets his food with a dance and a smile! The pair are house trained and are usually quiet when left alone (Kuna will often bark at dogs or people that get too close to the home). Kuna hasn’t yet learned how to let you know when she has to go out, so she will need to be let out more often. Both are also trained to use pee pads, so you can be worry-free during the night or when you go out! This lovely pair is good with cats, children, and other dogs, though Kuna will take a few minutes to warm up to big dogs.

Matata does have some health needs that requires a special schedule to maintain. He recently has a major dental and lost numerous teeth. He also has an enlarged heart, but it was determined that he doesn’t need treatment at this time. Recently, Matata had bladder stone surgery and it was discovered then that he also had kidney stones. Since the surgery to remove them is quite specialized and intensive, and given that they aren’t currently causing him any pain or discomfort, Sit With Me has opted not to remove them for the time being. He will need to stay on a special prescription food to help slow down the formation of future stones, but there’s a chance that he will require intervention for the stones in the future. Matata’s ideal home will need to bring him for check-ups at the vet regularly to ensure that there are no new formations, or that smaller ones can be flushed out using a much less intrusive procedure.

It is imperative that any adopter be committed to this schedule and the costs associated with managing Matata's specific health needs which may include surgery.

About the Rescue:

Sit With Me Rescue is a foster-based rescue that helps dogs from local shelters. All of their dogs are adopted out spayed/neutered, heart worm tested, microchipped and have core vaccinations. Their adoption process involves an application, phone call and home visit prior to placement. They do their best to accommodate a trial adoption period and are committed to their dogs for their lifetime. They can be found on Facebook and Twitter.

OLM Pet of the Week is a weekly segment on our site which showcases adoptable pets in our Capital. Each week a new pet will be featured in order to help them find a loving forever home. Any Ottawa-based animal rescue interested in having an adoptable pet featured can email
