Ottawa’s Fastest Runners Compete for Duke’s Cup at Inaugural Wellington Mile

With nearly 600 runners participating in the sold-out 2013 Wellington Mile, the Thanksgiving Monday (October 14) event is set to become Canada’s biggest mile-running event in its inaugural year. The main event is The Duke’s Cup finals for elite runners.

The Duke’s Cup, a beautiful wooden trophy handcrafted by Ottawa artist David L’Allier Money, will display the names of each year’s champions and will be on display year-round at The Table Vegetarian Restaurant (1230 Wellington St W), the presenting sponsor of the event. A prize purse of $2,000 will also be awarded.

The Wellington Mile was conceived and organized by Geordie McConnell, owner of Ottawa Fit, an organization that includes the Ottawa Running Club and receives support from a team of local volunteers. This year, the club’s 150 members decided to celebrate the spirit of Thanksgiving by sponsoring hundreds of local children to take part in an exciting race event.
