There are so many special events and road closures that getting around is a total pain. So, if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em! Get outside and join in the Ottawa Race Weekend, Great Glebe Garage Sale and an endless number of uplifting, fun and musical events! See you out there!

Inspiration Village, York Street, May 20 – September 4

Have you made it down to the Byward Market yet? On York Street and Sussex Drive Inspiration Village is now open! In an unusual twist, Inspiration Village is built out of sea containers and is now open daily from noon to 8 p.m. (until 10 p.m. on Canada Day) with exhibits, demonstrations and performances. A core site for Ottawa 2017 programming, this edgy-looking entertainment locale on York Street will be the site of a succession of special exhibits and performing arts events, each one showcasing Canada’s provinces and territories.

Nature Nocturne: Arctic, Museum of Nature, May 26

The weather might be heating up, but the Museum of Nature is keeping things cool as they get ready for a summer full of Arctic-themed programming. Tonight, from 8pm to midnight, check out the museum at night during this Arctic themed 19+ Nature Nocturne. Grab a selfie with a seal (or sealfie!), shake a polar bear’s paw, or chill out on one of our dance floors. Don’t miss out on sneak peeks of the fabulous programming were preparing for our summer Arctic spectacular. Costume recommendations: Blues and whites, ice and snow, Arctic animals. Tickets are $25.

Capital Pop-Up Cinema, Sparks Street, May 27

This Saturday marks the season opener of the Capital Pop-Up Cinema! This (free!) travelling outdoor cinema will make its first stop on Sparks Street (between O’Connor & Metcalfe) for a screening of the LEGO Movie. The film starts at sundown (around 8pm) and there will be free popcorn too! Come early to show off your LEGO building skills and even meet members of ParLUGment, The LEGO® User's Group of Canada's Capital Region, and get tips from the experts.

Voices in Harmony Spring Show, Woodroffe United Church, May 27

This Saturday, Voices in Harmony presents: Broadway and Hit Parades with Attitude! Audiences enjoy the lively performances where approximately 60 singers memorize the music, allowing them to sing directly to audiences of all ages, while performing in full costume. Tickets are $15 and include refreshments. The concert begins at 7:30pm.

The Great Glebe Garage Sale, The Glebe, May 27

Some people say Victoria Day is the unofficial start of summer, but in Ottawa it is the Great Glebe Garage Sale! The Great Glebe Garage Sale is a community event organized by the Glebe Community Association since 1986. Homeowners in the Glebe are the primary vendors working on their front lawns, driveways and porches. Collectively they make one giant sale that has become an annual community festival attracting thousands of people to the neighbourhood. This Saturday, come take a stroll through the ‘hood and find a treasure or two!

Tamarack Ottawa Race Weekend, Downtown Ottawa, May 27-28

It is that time of year again!The Tamarack Ottawa Race Weekend is Canada’s largest running weekend. In 2016, close to 47,000 people participated in six events over the weekend, from the Ottawa 2K to the Scotiabank Ottawa Marathon. Some will even be participating in the Lumberjack Challenge which means running will finish four events during the 2017 Tamarack Ottawa Race Weekend: the Ottawa 2K, the HTG Sports Ottawa 5K, the Ottawa 10K and the Scotiabank Ottawa Marathon. Check online for the best places to check out the action and, of course, road closures.

41st Annual Odawa Pow Wow, 200 Moodie, May 27 & 28

This weekend welcomes the 41st Annual Odawa Pow Wow. This traditional pow wow is free and open to all, with a suggested donation at the entrance. The location of the pow wow is 200 Moodie Drive, next to Highway 417 (Queensway). This family friendly event runs Saturday and Sunday with gates opening at 10am and the Grand Entry at noon.

OTTAWA WELCOMES THE WORLD –Ethiopia, Horticulture Building, May 28

Sunday from 10am - 5:30pm the Embassy of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia to Canada joins in the celebration of the 150th anniversary of Canada by taking part in the “Ottawa Welcomes the World in 2017”. At this free event the Embassy will showcase Ethiopia’s rich cultural heritage, cultural dances, culinary experience, exotic tourist destinations, export products and overall country presentation to Ottawa residents. The event is organized around themes of trade, tourism, education, cultural food and beverage tasting, presentation of cultural dance and fashion show. Come out and see what Ethiopia is all about!

The Weeknd, Canadian Tire Centre, May 28

End your weekend, with, well, The Weeknd. Sunday at 7:30pm The Weeknd will be at the Canadian Tire Centre as part of his first-ever world tour – Starboy: Legend of the Fall 2017 World Tour, along with special guests 6lack, Belly and Rae Sremmurd. This Canadian sensation started off his career anonymously, but The Weeknd first broke into the music scene with the 2011 mixtape House of Balloons followed by the studio album Kiss Land in 2013 and the widely recognized Beauty Behind the Madness that earned him two Grammy Awards in 2015. This concert promises non stop hits from one of the hottest artists of today. Tickets start at $40.

4th Annual Parkdale Food Centre Gala, The Great Canadian Theater Company, June 1

This Thursday, the 4th Annual Parkdale Food Centre Gala will wow you with the best of the best culinary delights of the Parkdale neighbourhood all in one place, the Great Canadian Theater Company. There will be many amazing food and beverage partners, including Absinthe, Allium, Bar Laurel, Dish, Supply & Demand, Beyond the Pale, Urban Element, Thyme & Again, Holland Cake & Shake and a sure to be new favourite Stella Luna gelato! Each $40 ticket includes three drinks and a performance by the Peptides! All proceeds go to the food centre and the Gala kicks off at 6:30pm.
