Pets are Family Too — Pawshake Survey

Just walk along any street or along the canal in Ottawa at any time of day and you will see people with their pets. People view their pets as family members, and with winter holidays pet owners can be stressed and worried about what they will do with their pet.

According to a recent Pawshake.ca survey, 56 per cent of pet owners would cancel their winter or holiday travel plans if they didn't find a proper solution for their pet. And when it comes to being out of the house more for shopping, socializing and attending events during the holiday season, 40 per cent of pet owners feel guilty leaving their pets and 34 per cent will leave work early to get home to their pet before having to leave again for the evening.

What options do pet owners have and what should pet owners consider before they leave their pets?

Pet owners have a few options available to them when it comes to leaving their pet. It's important do research and find the best option for you and your pet. Check out your options online and check with families and friends on what they've used in the past. If you're trying a service for the first time, make sure you schedule a meet and greet. For example, pet owners using Pawshake.ca are able to login in and search in their area to find a list of available pet sitters and walkers in their neighbourhood. Once you find someone you like, you can schedule a meet and greet to ensure that the pet sitter and your pet get along. This also gives you the opportunity to ask questions and get to know your sitter – ensuring you're comfortable before moving forward with their services. A great thing about Pawshake is you can also get live updates from your pet sitter including messages and photos.

Tanguy Peers, co-founder of Pawshake said that the Pawshake survey found that:

  • 72 per cent of pet owners have had pet sitters send text updates and/or photos of their pet.
  • 44 per cent of pet owners plan to spend between $1 and $25 on a holiday gift for their pet.
  • In terms of pet owners social lives, 52 per cent claim their pet has had a positive impact.
  • 24 per cent feel guilty if they stay out too long and end up leaving social occasions early.
  • 48 per cent of pet owners have left the TV or entertainment on for their pet while away.

Pawshake recently launched in Canada – it's an online service that allows pet owners to find loving, vetted and insured pet sitters, walkers and home boarding. It brings together the best of both worlds: animal lovers can offer their services as pet sitters, and pet owners can enjoy their time away without worrying about their pet. And most importantly, your pet doesn't have to spend their holiday in a cage or kennel, but will be loved in a family environment.
