Shut Off for Earth Hour 2017

Earth Hour is a global movement started in 2007 by the World Wild Fund for Nature (WWF). The initiative serves as a means for citizens of the world to collectively think about and conserve energy for 60 minutes on a single day. This year, Earth Hour is March 25th from 8:30 PM to 9:30 PM. During this time, WWF encourages the public to turn off their lights and electronic devices and engage in energy-free activities. Though it may seem like a small gesture, previous years have seen major cities like Melbourne, Australia’s energy usage drop a whopping 13% during Earth Hour observation. Consider participating with your family this year to do your part in preserving the planet. Here are some fun, electric-free activities for you to try out!

Board Games

With the popularity of gaming consoles and computers, and not to mention busy schedules, many of us probably don’t play bad games regularly. They are such a great way to bond with family and friends though and serve as a really fun, energy-free activity for Earth Hour. There are so many different board games out there from the contemporary favourite “Settlers of Catan,” to the family classics like “Monopoly” and “Life”. Card games and dominoes are another great option if board games aren’t your thing!

Fondue Night

If you’re a foodie, turn Earth Hour into a fondue hour! Use a candle-operated fondue dish, as opposed to an electric one, to melt down some chocolate to eat with marshmallows, graham crackers or assorted fruit. Fondue is best shared with friends or family and actually makes for a great snack to have while playing board or card games!

Reflecting and Pampering

With the constant distraction of technology, sometimes we forget to take some time to just be with ourselves and reflect inwardly. If you’re going to be alone for Earth Hour this year, take some time to relax, reflect and pamper yourself. With the lights out, candles lit, television off and devices out of reach, take some time to meditate, do some journaling, light exercises like yoga or pilates, or anything else that will put your mind at ease.

Explore Your City

If the weather is nice, use the hour to go for an evening stroll around your city! This makes for a fun activity to do solo, with your family, or can even be romantic if you go with your significant other. Here in Ottawa there are tons of places to explore, such as the Canal, Parliament Hill, the Byward Market and the many monuments throughout the downtown core. No matter what city you live in, there is bound to be something to discover!
