These Mind-Blowing Hot Cocoa Recipes Will Keep You Warm All Winter

Temperatures are quickly dropping and we’re all in need of a warm, comforting pick-me-up! Here are some unique and delicious hot cocoa recipes that will keep you toasty, and your tastebuds happy, all throughout the snowy season. All these recipes make 3-4 servings, but can be easily doubled or tripled if you’re feeding a crowd!

Snow White

This hot chocolate is the colour of snow and highlights the sweet, rich flavour of white chocolate.

Ingredients

  • 4 cups milk
  • 1 cup white chocolate chips or chopped white chocolate
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt

Add the milk, white chocolate and salt to a medium-sized saucepan over medium-low heat. Whisk continuously until the chocolate is completely melted and incorporated with the milk. If the milk begins to boil before the chocolate is fully melted, turn down the heat to avoid burning. Pour into mugs and served topped with whipped cream, marshmallows, white chocolate shavings or whatever else your heart desires!

Hot & Spicy

This Mexican-inspired, chile-infused hot chocolate will warm you up in no time!

Ingredients

  • 3 ounces bittersweet chocolate chips or chopped bittersweet chocolate
  • 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon ancho chile powder
  • 1 ¾ cups milk
  • ¼ cup heavy cream
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Add the bittersweet chocolate, cocoa powder, sugar and chile powder to a medium-sized saucepan over medium-low heat. Stir until the chocolate begins to melt. Slowly whisk in the milk, followed by the cream. Once all the ingredients are well incorporated, drop in the cinnamon stick and let the mixture come to a simmer. Remove the pot from heat, cover with a lid, and let steep for one hour. Right before serving, whisk in the vanilla. Remove the cinnamon stick, pour into mugs, and serve topped with whipped cream and a sprinkle of cinnamon!

Chocolate Nog

Craving both hot chocolate and eggnog? Kill two birds with one stone with this festive fusion!

Ingredients

  • 1 1/4 cups milk
  • 6 ounces bittersweet chocolate chips or chopped bittersweet chocolate
  • 2 cups eggnog
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract

Add the milk and chocolate to a medium sized saucepan over medium-low heat. When milk is heated through, but not boiling, remove the saucepan from the heat and let sit for 2 minutes. Then, whisk until the chocolate is fully melted and smooth. Return the saucepan to low heat and add eggnog. Once heated through, add the vanilla and it’s ready to serve!

Gingerbread Coa-kie

All the flavours of a spice gingerbread cookie in a liquid form – does it get any better?

Ingredients

  • 1/4 packed brown sugar
  • ¼ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 tablespoon molasses
  • 1 ½ teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1 ½ teaspoons ground ginger
  • ½ teaspoon allspice
  • Pinch of salt
  • 3 cups of milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

In a small saucepan over medium-low heat, add the brown sugar, cocoa powder, molasses, cinnamon, ginger, allspice and salt. While stirring, gradually pour in the milk. Continue stirring until all ingredients are incorporated and the mixture is heated through. Remove from heat, add the vanilla and give a final mix. Serve topped with whipped cream and a dash of ground ginger or cinnamon.

Spiked Peppermint

This adult spin on the classic peppermint hot chocolate is perfect for evenings after a long work day.

Ingredients

  • 4 cups of milk
  • 6 ounces of bittersweet chocolate chips or chopped bittersweet chocolate
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 ½ ounces peppermint schnapps
  • ¾ ounce vodka

Add the milk, chocolate and sugar to a saucepan over medium-low heat. Whisk until the chocolate and sugar is fully melted and the mixture is heated through. Remove from the heat and mix in the peppermint schnapps and vodka. Serve topped with whipped cream, crushed peppermint candy or marshmallows!
