Sascha Cole (Catherine Givings) and Dr. Givings (David Whiteley) weigh the merits of hiring a wet nurse for their baby, Lottie.

Directed by Bronwyn Steinberg, Ruhl’s Tony- and Pulitzer Prize-nominated play tells the story of Dr. Givings, a doctor in a 19th-century spa town who treats “hysteria” in women, but is blind to the state of his own unfulfilling and sterile marriage. As his female patients arrive for their electrically powered, secret treatment, his wife Catherine becomes curious… and jealous.

A new mother, Catherine has been pushed to hiring a wet nurse for their baby. Now, with a husband lost in scientific discovery and another woman caring for her child, Catherine is at loose ends in a tightly corseted world. Could her release also be found in the next room?

It has been staged across North America and Europe and translated into Spanish, Hebrew and German. The Ottawa production is presented by Toronto-based Same Day Theatre and Ottawa’s Plosive Productions and the Counterpoint Players.
