Winter Bucket List in Ottawa

Winter is the most dreaded time of the year here in Ottawa, but it doesn’t have to be all that bad! The National Capital Region provides various outdoor activities to beat the winter blues, becoming an outdoor fun haven bringing light at the end of the tunnel for the darkest time of the year. From skating on the largest ice rink in the world to enjoying a hot cup of cocoa, participating in these activities will definitely bring you the enjoyment you deserve. As a person who prefers the summer, I look forward to doing these events and activities, as they make winter bearable and actually enjoyable!

Skate on the largest Rink in the World

Ottawa’s very own Rideau Canal measures 7.8 km long, which goes from downtown reaching Dow’s Lake, offering many services along the way. Don’t have skates? Rentals are provided! Feeling hungry? There are many stops for a quick snack, such as beavertails on the way! Feeling exhausted? There are many resting stops available for your comfort. This is an ideal activity for getting exercise, fun with friends and family, and beautiful views for photography! Skating on the Rideau Canal is probably the most anticipated activity for the locals in the winter. This time, I plan to challenge myself to skate the whole route!

Take a break and visit Winterlude!

Conveniently located right by the Rideau Canal at Confederation Park, hype up your skating journey by visiting the most anticipated winter festival of the year. Please your eyes by having a look at the beautifully carved Ice sculptures, which glow at night. You can contribute to this by having the chance to carve your own ice sculpture there! How “cool” is that? Have a chance to experience Canada’s diverse culinary and cultural indoor and outdoor activities through this event! This is also ideal for families, as there is a giant playground for children, giving you the time to look around. And best of all-this is all FREE! This will be open from February 1st-18th, giving you plenty of time to go at your own convenience!

Beavertails!

You did not get the true Canadian experience unless you’ve ate a Beavertail. Savour this mouth watering fried pastry, with delicious toppings while you’re skating or visiting the Winterlude festival! There will be many kiosks set along the way, conveniently located wherever you are.

Hit the slopes for Downhill Skiing!

Whether you’re a beginner or expert, skiing is an absolute must for the winter. Ottawa has so many options with its surrounding hills, with different levels to fit your skills! They include Mont Cascades, Pakenham, Calabogie, Camp Fortune and many more. Don’t know how to ski? Fear not. There are lessons available in all of the locations.

Enjoy working out by Cross Country Skiing!

This is a great way for staying fit during the winter months, and if you love the outdoors. Cross country skiing not only is an amazing exercise that works your muscles, but also very visually pleasing with Ottawa and Gatineau’s scenic routes.
