Atelier, Beechwood Gastropub, la Maison Conroy, The Piggy Market and the Albion Rooms, you’d have to either clone yourself or be in the position of a teleportation device if you wanted to sample each of their wares in only a few hours. Well, that or get yourself to City Hall on September 13 for the return of Feast of Fields.
Now in year two, this unique event brings the above and other members of the Ottawa culinary elite together for a unique event celebrating the region’s Organic Farmer’s Harvest and the city’s top Chefs. Best of all you’ll be helping others while helping satisfy your sure to be rumbling stomach.
Though this is only the second event of its kind in the Nation’s Capital, Organic Advocates Feast of Fields was first established in 1989 by Chefs Jamie Kennedy and Michael Stadlander. The mandate was a simple one. The two wanted to promote environmental awareness as well a the benefits in eating organic meals.
"For 25 years Organic Advocates has been promoting organic agriculture, putting chefs and farmers together raising awareness about organics to the public and helping finance organic projects,” says Organic Advocates President, Daniel Gilbert.
“In that time frame, organic agriculture has become the fastest growing segment of the industry and the public has become very aware of organic products which can now be found in most grocery stores. We have expanded our mandate to also help promote environmental concerns, local and sustainable agriculture and a healthy life through eating organic foods."
Every plate is made up of organic delicacies, most only grown within a few miles of the city core. But there’s an even bigger reason you’ll be feeling good after feeling full. Attendees can be assured they are making a difference to those in need as funds raised during Feast of Fields are donated to support Carefor Health & Community Services.
The organization offers extensive home care services throughout the community including personal support services and rehabilitation therapy. Working in partnership with The Canadian Organic Growers Ottawa/St. Lawrence chapter, Carefor has attached itself to Feast of Fields for some much needed support in their dementia care programs and services.
Participating chefs include recent Ottawa Life Magazine’s Best Of inductees Warren Sutherland (Sutherland’s), Jeff Stoveld (Top of the Hill Bakery) and Joe Thottungal (Coconut Lagoon). Ingredients to the feast have been provided by places like Kricklewood Farms, Luxy Farms and Backyard Edibles, to name a few. Guess will be able to wash it all down with some Top Shelf Distillery cocktails where you can taste for yourself what has been causing the buzz about these new bevys on the block in recent months. Beau’s returns as founding sponsor of the event.
