Bucket List: Spend a Day at the Spa

It was finally Friday, and my boyfriend Jeff and I were zipping along Highway 5 to begin our day at the spa. We arrived at Le Nordik Spa (16 chemin Nordik, Old Chelsea, Quebec) and were immediately transported to a purely natural world. After waiting comfortably for a few minutes (as there were so many people here on this beautiful day), we had our chance to enter the Nordic baths.

To experience this authentic form of relaxation, you warm up in the sauna or steam bath for 10 to 15 minutes. We chose to begin our day in the Eucalyptus Steam Sauna, inspired by the Roman and Turkish baths that were once widespread throughout the Mediterranean region. The high humidity and ceramic building materials give the sauna a distinctive climate. In the Eucalyptus sauna, the steam is infused with essential oils of eucalyptus and mint. Eucalyptus is known for its many health benefits, in particular for the respiratory and immune systems.

After 10 hot and steamy minutes, we did a much-needed quick pass under the Nordic waterfall, which is quite the opposite of the heated steam room – it’s freezing! Finally, we rested for 15 minutes in one of the relaxation areas, available outside or inside, seated in front of a warm fire, wrapped in a hammock, or simply lounging on one of the many poolside chairs.

Time to repeat the ritual, beginning this time with the Finnish sauna. As the name suggests, the Finlandia sauna is part of the pure Nordic tradition of Finland, thought to date back at least 2,000 years. Constructed in a spacious building dominated by solid wood, Finlandia has three levels of benches to vary exposure to heat, with the highest level being the hottest. A high-efficiency wood stove heats over a tonne of stones, which radiate dry heat. Every hour, “löyly” – or steam vapor – is produced by pouring water or snow over the hot stones.

Another hot spot, another cool dunk – this time in one of the cold pools for only a few seconds. Our third cycle began in the aromatic steam sauna, where the steam diffuses 10 different aromas in alteration, such as orange peel, cedar and lavender. Each aroma is selected for its beneficial effects on the body. Afterwards, a dip in the temperate pool, and then finally immersing ourselves in one of the whirlpools for a moment or two of total relaxation.

NÄKYMÄ - PISCINE PANORAMIQUEIn addition to causing an immediate sensation of well-being and relaxation, heat therapy can eliminate toxins, relax muscles, improve sleep quality, boost the immune system and increase body oxygenation. By purifying the body and spirit, it enables enthusiasts to find their natural balance.

No reservation is required. Two towels and a lock are provided upon arrival; however, you must bring your bathing suit, sandals and a reusable water bottle; you can also bring your own bathrobe, rent one or buy one at the shop.

Jeff and I are thrilled that we are able to access this nature retreat so close to home. I’m sure you all are too – and I have two passes to give away to prove it! In order for your entry to qualify, you must simply comment on this post. One entry per person, please. I will choose the winner using Random.org at noon EST on Friday June 28 and the passes will be mailed to you.

Good luck!
