Buying on a Budget: How to Stay Fashionable for Less

As a cash-strapped student, I have mastered the art of finding the best possible buys when shopping for the latest fashions. I have purchased over-the-knee boots for $30, a Limited blazer for $4, and a Juicy Couture polo for $7. All follow one of my cardinal rules – which I only break for the most impressive of purchases – never buy anything for over $35. How to do I follow such a strict regimen? Below are my top tips for budget buying, and suggestions for where to shop!

1. Price First, Purchase Later

When shopping, I always check the price tag before further examining an item. This way, I don’t fall in love with an item only to realize it is beyond my means. This never fails, unless, however, a store cruelly displays a lust-worthy item on a mannequin – in that case, employ maximum willpower.

Where to Buy: Stores with prices for a student budget include H&M, Forever 21, Costa Blanca, Winners and Wal-Mart.

2. Simple Basics Needn’t Be Pricey

A white tee shirt is a white tee shirt, so opt for the best deal possible when buying layering basics like tanks and tees. If they become stained, stretched or faded, you can just replace when needed without the guilt of throwing away money.

Where to Buy: Old Navy, Wal-Mart and Forever 21 all have great basics, often priced under $5.

3. Only Buy Under-things on Sale

I have never bought a pair of underwear or bra that was not on sale. Stores like La Senza and La Vie En Rose have such regular sales, that it is thoughtless to buy without a deal. Wait for prices such as 7 for $30 on underwear, and don’t be afraid to sift through the $10 bra bins – you’ll be surprised at the styles they occasionally throw in.

Where to Buy: La Senza, La Vie En Rose, and Jacob Lingerie have cute styles, and regularly have sales in store.

4. Shop the Sale Racks

Sale racks are the greatest untapped resource when it comes to shopping. Many people write them off as unwanted and damaged items discarded by other shoppers, but they are often filled with last-items, old styles and returns. I have pulled some of my most unique, compliment-worthy finds from the depths of a sale rack, so before you turn to the full price merchandise, head to the back of the store and do some digging.

Where to Buy: The Bay is my favourite store for top-notch sale racks, but H&M, GAP and Zara are other great options.

5. Don’t Drop Dough on Trendy Pieces

Trendy pieces are just that – trends. With a style shelf-life, items like a purple faux-fur coat or a pair of silver jeans shouldn’t be treated as investments. Save your money for classic items, like a great trench coat or a perfect pair of jeans, and purchase your hot-right-now pieces from fast fashion stores.

Where to Buy: H&M, Zara, Forever 21
