With the days getting longer, the breeze a little warmer and the sunshine a little brighter, everyone’s thoughts are turning towards summer and that means cottage season. Opening the cottage is one of the most exciting times of the year and the perfect opportunity to do some renovations, such as adding a bathroom to get ready for those long weekends and lazy summer days. To help get your season off to a great start, check out these tips from Saniflo:

Plan ahead:

Are there any big projects you want to tackle to take your cottage from a backwoods camp to your dream retreat? Discuss ways to improve your property like redoing the deck or dock, landscaping or adding a bathroom, and create a plan to get it done.

Prepare a cottage opening checklist:

Make a list of all the things you need to do to get your cottage ready. This can include:

  • Turning all your services back on before you go.
  • Bringing all the necessary equipment, tools, building materials and supplies with you.
  • Making sure all insurance and other important documents are up-to-date.

Do a walk-around both inside and outside the cottage as soon as you arrive:

Make a list of all the things you need to do to get your cottage ready. This can include:

  • Make sure to check the entire property for damages, repairs, tune-ups, general chores and maintenance.
  • Inspect the foundation, roof, siding, water and power systems.
  • Check for evidence of leaks, animals or other damages.
Don’t forget to complete general repairs like changing batteries and light bulbs, fixing doors, windows, stairs, railings and other cottage maintenance.

Start your renovations

A little hard work at the beginning can make your summer retreat even more wonderful. While renovating the cottage can seem like a big job, there are some solutions that are simple and cost-effective. Take adding a bathroom. While a traditional bathroom installation might be almost impossible in a cottage setting, a macerator and grinder system can be installed on top of any finished floor without the need for a rough-in or major construction. A new bathroom can be easily installed at a fraction of the cost as compared to the conventional alternatives and be done in as little as one day.

Sit back, relax and enjoy the summer!
