Ottawa, ON – More than a year after taking time from work to receive treatment for breast cancer, CBC Ottawa’s Lucy van Oldenbarneveld is officially back in the newsroom and ready to return to her anchor chair.
CBC Ottawa is pleased to announce that Lucy will be returning to the 6:00 p.m. newscast as of Wednesday, November 2, 2016.
“Returning to work, means a return to normal, and that is the most precious thing,” said van Oldenbarneveld. “I’m feeling relieved to be done, grateful to be alive and excited about the future.”
Over the course of her treatment, van Oldenbarneveld shared personal video blogs chronicling her progress. Last week, she recorded a new message announcing that she is slowly coming back to work.
“We are delighted that Lucy will be returning to our newsroom,” said Marissa Nelson, Senior Managing Director, CBC Ontario Region. “A respected and recognized journalist, Lucy has been a pillar of inspiration for those battling cancer. She has openly shared her 16-month journey with viewers, using her usual sense of humour, and offering an example of strength and resiliency. I know the city will welcome her back.”
Van Oldenbarneveld joined CBC Ottawa in 2003, first as a field reporter and Friday host of the popular radio show Ottawa Morning, where she was an empathetic interviewer with a sense of humour and with what one fan described as “her sass and her wit.” She then moved to television, hosting the flagship daily newscast in 2006, and welcomed cohost Adrian Harewood to the desk in 2011. Her work has been recognized with a Canadian Screen Award nomination, a Gemini nomination and the Gold World Medal for Best Talk / Interview program at the New York Festival.
