Nelligan O'Brien Payne Kicks off 50th Anniversary Party at Terry Fox Run

On January 1st, 1963, John P. Nelligan opened his own law firm. Fifty years later, Nelligan, along with partners Janice Payne and Allan O’Brien, will kick off the firm’s anniversary party at the Terry Fox Run, CarletonUniversity on September 15th.

Lawyers John Nelligan and Denis Power founded Ottawa law firm Nelligan O'Brien Payne LLP, formerly Nelligan Power, 50 years ago. The firm is one of Eastern Ontario's most trusted and respected law firms. In the past half century it has grown from the original two founding partners to a team of over 60 lawyers and over 85 business and support staff. As a mid-size firm, Nelligan O'Brien Payne is not too big to deliver focused, individualized expertise, and not too small to offer a broad range of value-added services.

The Terry Fox Run was chosen as the kick-off for the party, given Nelligan O’Brien Payne’s long history of supporting this event.

On Saturday September 15, from 8:30 to 8:45,law firm participants will gather at Carleton University's Anniversary Park, prior to the start of the race, for a group photo with John Nelligan, Allan O’Brien and Janice Payne.

Later, a 50th Anniversary Private Party will be held at the R.A. Centre, Clarke Hall, 2451 Riverside Drive, for staff, lawyers and their families and friends.

The party starts with lunch at 11:00. At 11:30, Mayor Jim Watson and Pam MacEachern, head of the firm’s family law group, will welcome the crowd of more than 200 people.

At 11:45, a videoand talent show will feature a variety of acts by lawyers and staff. Lots of laughs guaranteed.

At 12 noon, the firm’s band The Nellotones – featuring lawyers Sean McGee, Steven Waller, Leanne Storms and friend Doug Gilchrist – will entertain the crowd.

And at 1:00 p.m., Mr. Nelligan will cut a special anniversary cake decorated with pictures of everyone at the firm. Sweet memories are made of this.

Now in his 92nd year, John Nelligan still enjoys coming to the firm he started 50 years ago.  He always welcomes visitors to his office to chat about recent cases, new legislation, or a topical news item he has read about in the daily newspaper. “John's energy and keen mind are still an inspiration to all of us,”says Janice Payne, partner, Nelligan O’Brien Payne.
