OC Transpo Offers Free Transit Weekend to Showcase Revamped Network
Ottawa residents can explore the city for free this weekend as OC Transpo rolls out a Free Service Weekend on Saturday, May 3 and Sunday, May 4. The initiative is part of an effort to introduce the public to the redesigned New Ways to Bus transit network and expanded O-Train service on Lines 1, 2, and 4.
The network overhaul, which officially took effect on Sunday, April 27, marks a major shift in OC Transpo’s approach to public transit. The system, which was traditionally built to funnel riders from the suburbs into Ottawa’s downtown core, has been reimagined in response to changing commuting patterns. With more government and office workers now working from home, OC Transpo has reset its service model to better reflect current travel needs across the city.
During the Free Service Weekend, all buses, trains, and Para Transpo rides will be free and unlimited. Riders won’t need to tap their cards or pay any fare. Para Transpo users can book their trips through My Para Transpo or by calling 613-560-5000.
To help riders navigate the revamped system, OC Transpo encourages the use of its Travel Planner and the Transit app. For those looking to get out and explore, the entire city is within easy (and free) reach.
In addition to the free weekend service, Saturday, May 3, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., OC Transpo will host a family-friendly event at Hurdman Station, where visitors can meet the transit service mascot OC Owl, learn about new services, safety features, and other customer experience upgrades.
Fingers crossed that the Free Service Weekend will convince riders to return to OC Transpo and that the redesigned network can deliver on-time performance and reliability — both key to restoring public confidence in OC Transpo’s service.
Whether you’re a daily commuter or a weekend adventurer, hop on board. This is your chance to experience the new face of transit in Ottawa — for free.
