For this week’s Pet of the Week, we are excited to introduce you to this spectacular lady who is looking for a home to call her own. Meet Ona, a Catahoula Leopard dog mix who is being fostered by Catahoula Rescue Ontario. There are many things that make Ona a very special pooch. First off, her name is pronounced Ahh-Na—a fact that’s lost on Ona, as she is completely deaf.

Ona1 - LYThis beautiful girl is just over a year old and is not letting her hearing loss hinder her ability to have fun and live life to the fullest. She’s even learning commands via hand signals and can now understand the hand signs for basic commands. She loves going for walks and hanging out with her people in the great outdoors. She also adores meeting new dogs and people. When it’s down time, she becomes a big snugglebug and cuddles up to her foster family on the couch.

Due to the nature of her breed, Ona is high energy and will need a lot of exercise, both physically and mentally. Her ideal home is with a patient family that is willing to continue working with her on hand commands and signals. She would also thrive in a home with another dog that’s willing to teach her routine and rules. Since she can’t hear social cues from other dogs, having a buddy would help her learn to read canine body language and social expectations when meeting other dogs.

Ona was very much loved in her former home, but unfortunately had to be given up due to a change in the family that meant she wouldn’t get the same amount of love and care she deserves. Ona is spayed and up to date on all her shots. She’s also house and crate trained, and views her crate as a place of comfort when she’s feeling overwhelmed. Ona does well with people of all ages, but can be a bit over zealous with puppy power.

Catahoula Rescue Ontario is committed to finding Ona a great home and that means they are here for them as well as Ona to make the transition successful and happy for everyone. For more information about Ona, you can email Catahoula Rescue of Ontario at, or fill out an application for adoption at
