War of 1812 Veterans Celebrated in Musical Showcase

With the War of 1812 bicentennial anniversary very top of mind these days, 2012 marked the launch of the 12th season of A Musical Taste of Our Canadian Heritage / Notre patrimoine canadien, une odyssée musicale – a bilingual musical showcase paying tribute to Canada, including a new sequence on the War of 1812. This year’s production used actual Afghan campaign veterans to portray the soldiers and various regiments from the War of 1812.

Impresario Deborah Davis’ blockbuster portrays the history of music in Canada, using 50 musicians and dancers, and features more than 100 pieces of music in a live historical retrospective of the making of the Canadian nation. The highly acclaimed A Musical Taste of Our Canadian Heritage is the longest-running concert show in Canada.

Odyssey Showcase, the charity organization that presents the annual musical extravaganza, featured a special War of 1812 component for its 2012 season at a total of nine sold-out shows in April and June. All performances were held at the Canadian Museum of Civilization Theatre in Gatineau.

The show’s main sponsor is TD Canada Trust. This year, the Government of Canada also contributed funding through the War of 1812 Commemoration Fund.

Odyssey Showcase is a registered charity that advances education by providing information to the public and presenting the live performance on the history of Canadian culture, arts and music. If you missed A Musical Taste of Our Canadian Heritage this season, the production will roar to life once again April 15-19 and June 3-14, 2013 (dates are subject to change).
