Winterlude gets the big freeze again as all in-person events cancelled

After announcing last month that Winterlude would be returning with in-person events for the 2022 season, Canadian Heritage has been forced to ice the popular National Capital Region festival for the second year in a row.

With the increasing severity of the COVID-19 Omicron situation across the country, Canadian Heritage stated that as a result of discussions with their partners about the safest way to conduct the festivities—scheduled to run from February 4 to 21 at various sites across the region—they decided to take the safest approach and cancel the festival altogether.

The cancellation includes activities at the Snowflake Kingdom, one of the most popular Winterlude spots at Gatineau’s Jacques-Cartier Park, which features zip-lining, tubing, food trucks, and more.

As of now, the only event that will still go ahead is a virtual version of the Ice Carving Competition—the public will be able to view and vote for their favourite ice statue via the Winterlude website.
