Fixing American Democracy – An Outsider’s View
Most Canadians have conflicting emotions about the political situation in our powerful neighbour to our immediate south. Smugness and alarm engage in an ongoing tug-of-war in our brains and our guts as we watch the politics of the United States of America become increasingly fractious, dysfunctional, and, to a not
America, we need to talk.
Well, if that was the American election, we had it. Notwithstanding the almost inevitable chicanery and nonsense likely to occur between now and January 20th about which I’ve written previously, the fat lady has sung and Joe Biden will win the presidency by 36 Electoral College votes and 5m+ direct votes.
What will Canada do?
It’s late November 2020. After declaring himself the victor on election night, it is becoming clear as the results of mail-in ballots are counted that Donald Trump has, in fact, lost the Electoral College and the election. As promised, Trump is refusing to accept those results. Rigged election. Fake news.
