Where to Eat, Sip, and Celebrate in Ottawa this Summer
The 18-Hospitality Group has become a cornerstone of Ottawa’s ByWard Market dining scene. Led by Executive Chef David Godsoe, the group now manages five stylish venues—four in historic Ottawa buildings and one across the river in Gatineau. All are located in properties owned by the National Capital Commission, with another on the way in Rockcliffe Park in 2026.
It all began nearly 25 years ago with Restaurant e18hteen, a fine-dining institution that continues to turn heads with its award-winning cuisine, strong TripAdvisor reviews, and consistent praise in foodie circles. It’s a CAA/AAA Four Diamond recipient and a go-to for special occasions—or simply treating yourself.
At a recent media night, co-owner Caroline Gosselin summed up the group’s mission perfectly: they’ve created beautiful spaces for people to “celebrate life.” Whether you’re sipping a cocktail at Maison Charron with a river view or gathering for a milestone dinner at Ei8hteen, you’ll find the same warm hospitality and attention to detail.
Here’s a quick taste of what you can expect at four of their standout spots:
Restaurant ei8hteen
– 18 York Street
Ottawa’s go-to for elegant steak and seafood, ei8hteen first opened in 2001 in a gorgeous historic space with soaring ceilings, stone walls, and striking local artwork.
This summer, they’re offering a special Happy Hour menu daily from 4:30–6:30 p.m., featuring appetizers like the light and lovely Maritime Roll, East Coast oysters, and cocktails like the Negroni Sbagliato and Aperol Spritz, best enjoyed on their charming patio.
Mon–Thurs: 4:30–10 p.m.
Fri–Sun: 4:30–11 p.m.
Sidedoor Contemporary Kitchen & Bar
– 18B York Street
Tucked just behind e18hteen, look for the white S¦D on the awning above the door. Inside, you’ll find a relaxed vibe and shareable Southeast Asian-inspired plates in a sun-drenched space.
The tacos? Explosions of flavour. The drinks? The Cleanse—a refreshing blend of Hendrick’s gin, aloe, cucumber, and lime—has become my official summer go-to.
Mon: 4–10:30 p.m.
Tues–Thurs: 11:30 a.m.–10:30 p.m.
Fri–Sat: 11:30 a.m.–11 p.m.
The Hyde Bar
– 15 George Street
Just across the courtyard from Sidedoor, up a discreet metal staircase, you’ll find The Hyde: part speakeasy, part elevated pub.
Moody midnight teal walls, soft lighting, and cushioned banquettes set the tone for an intimate night out. The barmaid, a self-professed martini lover, confidently claimed to make “the best in town.” We believed her.
Thurs–Sat: 5 p.m.–late
Maison Charron
– 164 Rue Laurier, Gatineau
Located in Jacques-Cartier Park, Maison Charron, a historic gem on the Gatineau River, offers front-row views of the Ottawa skyline from its expansive veranda, while the lively patio bar out back is an instant mood lifter. We tasted the Parma and Emilia pizzas—both delicious—and toasted the evening with expertly made Aperol Spritzes.
Daily: 12–10 p.m.
Looking to dine out this summer? These spots are calling your name—and I’m looking forward to visiting them again soon myself.
