Bloodaxe: The Sequel Set to Take the Viking Series by Storm?
Norse legends have always enjoyed a loyal audience; if for nothing else than the fact that the Viking culture is still wrapped in a fair amount of mystery. This is also one of the reasons why the hit television series Vikings enjoyed no fewer than nine years of critical success.
Fans are likewise gearing up for a spin-off that has been created by Michael Hirst (the man primarily responsible for the original series). Preliminary filming began in early summer 2025, and this next iteration has been titled Bloodaxe. What do we know so far? Can we expect the same gripping plots that defined Vikings? Let’s see what critics have uncovered.
Based on Historical Figures
While Vikings primarily centred around the exploits of Ragnar Lodbrok, this upcoming series focuses on a real-life Norwegian king known as Erik Bloodaxe. He ruled during the 10th century CE, and as the title suggests, his rule was associated with a fair amount of conflict. It is thought that Bloodaxe will follow the exploits of this king, and the many schemes he used to eventually rise to power.
Another primary personality is Gunnhild; the wife of Erik Bloodaxe. Similar to the relationship between Ragnar and Lagertha, we should expect this series to explore the bond between Eric and Gunnhild. Note that in an historical context, Bloodaxe takes place decades after Vikings, and immediately before Vikings: Valhalla.
Recurring Themes Certain to Keep Audiences Captivated
What are some of the reasons why countless Ontario online casino games (such as slots) feature Vikings as a central theme? Players will often cite attributes such as hefty multipliers, numerous paylines, fast-paced action, and the array of bonuses offered by the casinos themselves. However, this is only scratching the surface in terms of the mythical appeal associated with Norse history.
Fierce rivalries, hidden agendas, brutal conflicts, passionate relationships, and surprising betrayals are some of the aspects that served to define Viking culture. It just so happens that these are the very same themes set to be interwoven into the Bloodaxe storyline. Creator Michael Hirst was able to capitalise on these universal subjects throughout the Vikings series, and it can be argued that these will be just as important in Bloodaxe.
Cast Members
Although additional actors will certainly come to light as filming continues to progress, a handful of actors have already been confirmed. Here is a quick breakdown of some names, and their associated roles:
• Xavier Molyneux: Erik Bloodaxe
• Jessica Madsen: Gunnhild
• Levi Miller: Haakon the Good (the brother of Bloodaxe)
• Jesper Christiensen: King Harald Fairhair
• Rod Hallet: King Athelstan
Will this series have the same impact upon audiences that Vikings enjoyed? Might we see certain elements from the original franchise incorporated into its plot? Only time will tell. Either way, we will have to wait until 2026 when Bloodaxe is slated to be released on Amazon Prime.
