How to Protect Your Skin from Harsh Winter Weather

As the lovely autumn leaves give way to winter’s frosty bite, the chill in the air can have an unkind impact on your skin, even if you are often bundled under layers of warm clothing. The harsh Ottawa winter can strip your skin of its natural oils, rendering it dry, itchy, and prone to chapping and cracking.

Fret not! You can protect your skin from the harsh winter weather with the proper skin care regimen and practices. You don’t have to hide away until the groundhog pokes his head out again.

Stay Cozy and Hydrated

While it’s easy to curl up with a hot coffee or cocoa under one of those oversized hoodies or throw blankets, remember to drink plenty of water to keep your skin hydrated from the inside out. Eating foods high in water content can also help hydrate your skin. Try watermelon, oranges, kiwis, and watery veggies like cucumbers, zucchini, and celery.

Apply Moisturizer Regularly

One of your best defenses against the harsh Ottawa winter is a good moisturizer. Look for oil-based creams and lotions instead of water-based ones to create a protective layer on the skin that retains more moisture. Remember to moisturize as soon as you finish bathing, while your skin is still damp. Also, don’t forget to pay extra attention to your hands and lips, which are often exposed to the brutal elements.

Use Gentle Skin Care Products

Avoid skin products and cleansers that contain alcohol. Instead, opt for gentle, hydrating cleansers and alcohol-free toners which won’t dry out your skin. Natural, homemade masks made of honey and bananas can help keep your skin soft and moist.

Protect Your Skin

During winter, don’t skimp on sunscreen. Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen on your face and hands (if exposed) about 30 minutes before going outside. Also, think about functional fashion and protect your hands from the cold by wearing gloves, and consider wearing a scarf or a mask to protect your face.

Humidify Your Space

Whether at home or the office, space heaters and central heating systems dry out the air and can suck moisture right out of your skin. Using a humidifier can help maintain your skin’s moisture and make a huge difference in how it feels and appears.

Practice Healthy Lifestyle Choices

Cold weather can make us want to hit the snooze button and stay in bed all day, but try to stick to a regular exercise schedule. Working out regularly improves your circulation and can help keep your skin healthy and vibrant. Eating a healthy diet full of fruits, veggies, lean proteins, and whole grains can also improve your skin health.

Get Professional Advice

If you tend to have severe dry skin or conditions like eczema or psoriasis, visit a dermatologist before the onset of winter. They can provide you with a personalized skin care plan and can recommend products that will help you maintain healthy skin throughout the season.

The Ottawa winter doesn’t have to be a daunting prospect for your skin. With just a little extra care and planning, you can enjoy the winter wonderland while keeping your skin healthy and glowing. So pull on that toque, lace up those ice skates, and glide into the winter season with confidence!
