“Be careful what you wish for.” That might as well be the tagline for Obsession, a clever and entertaining horror film that takes a familiar fantasy and twists it into something far more sinister.
The story follows Bear (Michael Johnston) and his close-knit group of friends: Ian (Cooper Tomlinson), Nikki (Inde Navarrette), and Sarah (Megan Lawless). They have the kind of friendship that feels genuine and believable. They joke around, support one another, and seem to genuinely enjoy each other’s company. At the centre of it all is Bear, an awkward but likeable young man who harbours a massive crush on Nikki.
Bear’s feelings for Nikki are so overwhelming that he spends time rehearsing conversations with waitresses just to build up the confidence to talk to her. Unfortunately, all of that preparation disappears the moment he actually finds himself standing in front of Nikki. His confidence evaporates, his words become tangled, and he stumbles through every interaction. It’s an experience that will feel familiar to almost anyone who has ever had a crush. The film taps into that universal feeling of wanting to impress someone while simultaneously being unable to form a coherent sentence around them.
Everything changes when Bear stumbles across a mysterious product known as the “One Wish Willow.” Sold as a toy capable of granting wishes, it comes with subtle warnings that perhaps should not be ignored. Like most characters in horror films, Bear chooses to overlook the red flags. After all, what could possibly go wrong?
Rather than wishing for wealth, fame, or front-row BTS tickets, Bear makes a much more personal request. He wishes that Nikki would love him more than anything else in the world. It sounds innocent enough. After all, who wouldn’t want the affection of the person they care about most?
As horror fans know, wishes rarely work out exactly as intended.
Before long, Nikki’s affection for Bear transforms into something far more intense. Her feelings go beyond love and venture into obsession. What initially seems like a dream come true quickly becomes a nightmare as Bear realizes there is a vast difference between being loved and being possessed. The film does a great job escalating the situation, gradually turning uncomfortable moments into genuinely disturbing ones as Nikki’s attachment spirals out of control.
One of the strengths of Obsession is its ability to balance relatable emotions with horror. At its core, this is a story about longing, insecurity, and the temptation to take shortcuts in life. Bear’s wish is understandable because it comes from a place of vulnerability. Most people can identify with wanting someone to notice them or return their feelings. The film cleverly asks what would happen if that were granted in the worst possible way.
The performances help sell the premise. Michael Johnston makes Bear easy to root for, portraying him as an ordinary teenager whose poor decision unleashes chaos. Inde Navarrette is fantastic as Nikki, navigating the transition from friendly crush to increasingly unsettling obsession. Her performance gives the film much of its tension and helps elevate the story beyond a simple supernatural thriller. It’s a balance of cringe and horror that she executes perfectly.
The horror genre has been on an incredible run over the past several years, delivering fresh ideas and memorable stories. Obsession deserves a place within that conversation. While it may not completely reinvent the genre, it takes a familiar “be careful what you wish for” concept and injects it with enough personality, suspense, and dark humour to keep audiences engaged.
By combining a relatable coming-of-age story with supernatural horror elements, Obsession creates an entertaining ride that is equal parts funny, uncomfortable, and frightening. It serves as a reminder that sometimes getting exactly what you want can be the most terrifying outcome of all. Curry Barker has written and directed one of the best horror films of the year.
