2026 OLA Movie Awards: Keith Whittier’s Fun Look at the Year in Film

Back in July, I shared my favourite films of 2025 so far — a mix of blockbusters, oddballs, and the gems you only find when you’re not looking. Now it’s time for something a little less conventional and a lot more fun: the second annual Ottawa Life Movie Awards. They’re about as far from the Golden Globes or the Oscars as you can get, but they’re packed with my favourite — and not‑so‑favourite — films of the last year.

Guilty Pleasure of the Year

Novocaine — A guy meets the girl of his dreams and must battle thugs after she’s kidnapped. No problem…he doesn’t feel pain. Jack Quaid had a solid year, and this wasn’t even his best movie but it was enjoyable.

Don’t Watch this if You’re Afraid of Dating

It’s a tie between Companion, Oh, Hi

Best IMAX Movie

F1. We constantly hear, “You need to see this on the biggest screen possible”, and F1 lived up to the hype.

Best Canadian Movie

Meadowlarks. It’s an incredibly touching film about siblings affected by the Sixties Scoop who reunite after 50 years. In a year of strong Canadian films, this one stood out.

3 Canadian Movies that Weren’t My Favourite But Are Definitely Worth Your Time

40 Acres, Little Lorraine, Out Standing

Scene Stealer

Krypton, Superman

I enjoyed this movie, but my grade for it was increased due to this scene-stealing canine. Don’t tell me it was CGI, and don’t try to ruin it for me. Krypto was the real star of that movie.

Documentary of the Year

The Perfect Neighbour

If you haven’t seen it, you have to, and if you have, you are probably still talking about it.

It Wasn’t a Fluke Award
