Family, Football, and Fall Sunshine at TD Place
The Ottawa REDBLACKS did not read the memo that summer was almost at an end.
On a perfect September afternoon that more resembled July, the Ottawa REDBLACKS were facing the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.
There were plenty of pre-game activities to keep all ages entertained. For the adults, the REDBLACKS were hosting a tailgate event on the greenspace next to the Aberdeen Pavilion.
When one says tailgate, it might conjure up images of spring break or the movie Animal House; nothing could have been further from the truth. It was a well-organized affair more resembling a family reunion or friends’ get-together.
At the same time, it was the REDBLACKS’ Family Day. There were plenty of activities to keep the little ones entertained. Of course, there were a variety of football-themed activities, including meeting the mascot, Big Joe, a football toss, and kicking a field goal. Fifty-three-year-old me thought it was a good idea to try the field goal kick. I did okay for a middle-aged dude, but was immediately shown up by a pre-teen. As Bruce Springsteen would say, my Glory Days were behind me.
It was time for the game. It was fun to see numerous people wearing Bombers gear representing their team. There was friendly banter between the Bombers and REDBLACKS fans.
Before the game started, I had a chance to win a free food item. I correctly answered what year the north side stands were built – 1967. I guess I am better at answering trivia than kicking a football.
The REDBLACKS were the first to gain the upper hand with a touchdown on their opening drive. At halftime, the score stood at 17-8. Sadly, the REDBLACKS could not mount a comeback and lost 26-18.
Frankly, the final score did not really matter. Everything from the pre-game festivities, the beautiful weather, and the free popcorn made the day almost perfect.
