Freedom, Fortitude, and Legacy: ‘JOSIAH’ Comes to The Gladstone
From the depths of slavery in Maryland to international recognition as an abolitionist, author, and Canadian hero, Josiah Henson’s life is the kind of story that demands to be told. Now, thanks to the powerful one-man performance by acclaimed actor and dancer Cassel Miles, JOSIAH is coming to Ottawa’s The Gladstone Theatre from Tuesday, August 19 to Saturday, August 23 — and it promises to leave audiences riveted, inspired, and deeply moved.
Presented by Thousand Miles of Bricks Productions, JOSIAH is not just a play. It’s a passion project more than 20 years in the making. JOSIAH was originally co-created by Cassel Miles and Charles Robertson, and written by Charles Robertson. The show brings to life the remarkable journey of Josiah Henson — a man whose real-life story inspired Harriet Beecher Stowe’s Uncle Tom’s Cabin, and who became the first African-Canadian to appear on a Canadian postage stamp.
A Canadian Story That Demands the Spotlight
Cassel Miles first encountered Henson’s story in 2004 — and the impact was immediate. “His story captured my attention; touched my heart,” says Miles. “His fortitude and optimism in the face of brutality and degradation, his desire to care for and uplift others… How was it possible that I went through the entire Canadian school system and had never heard of him?”
That question became a calling. Over the years, Miles has worked to bring Henson’s story to Canadian audiences through stage productions that have drawn praise in Kingston, Toronto, and beyond. With direction by the legendary Jim Garrard and a talented creative team, JOSIAH has evolved into a commanding theatrical experience that combines storytelling, character work, movement, and soul.
This is not a conventional history lesson — it’s a visceral, deeply human portrayal of one man’s perseverance in the face of inhumanity, told through Miles’ virtuosic performance. From the auction block to his daring escape to freedom in Canada, Henson’s life is brought to vivid life through Miles’ voice, body, and heart.
Critical Acclaim and Emotional Impact
Audiences and critics alike have been swept away by Miles’ portrayal. Following a critically acclaimed run at Toronto’s Alumnae Theatre earlier this year, JOSIAH received standing ovations and glowing reviews.
“You absolutely must see this show. I could barely breathe during the performance. This guy is incredibly talented,” said one audience member. Another noted, “Cassel is masterful in his portrayal of many characters. Definitely a must-see.”
Rosemary Sadlier, past president of the Ontario Black History Society, called JOSIAH “a must-see,” adding that Miles’ blend of acting, dance, and voice work brings Henson’s story to life in a way that’s both unforgettable and urgently necessary.
More Than a Show — A Mission
For Miles, this production is about more than applause. It’s about recognition — for Josiah Henson, and for the many untold stories that helped shape Canada. In a time when conversations about identity, equity, and historical truth are more vital than ever, JOSIAH delivers a message of resilience, integrity, and hope.
“This is a story that models hope for a way of living through integrity, perseverance, and the uplifting of others,” says Miles. “We are dedicated to giving this story the life it deserves.”
