Join Alliance Française Ottawa on February 4 for an online Zoom event and make crêpes while practising your French. Two Alliance teachers will be breaking free from the books and tying on their aprons to talk you through process.

February 2 marks the French religious holiday Le Chaneleur or Candlemas, that celebrates the beginning of the end of winter.

How do crêpes fit in? Well, there are various reasons for making these delicious treats. One is that it was a good way to eat up extra wheat ahead of the new harvest. Another is that the crêpes resemble a sun so it was a reason to rejoice as the days started to get longer and sunnier. As you toss the crêpe, it is like the sun rising in the sky to make the day lighter.

Make sure to have the following ingredients ready before the event:

– 150g of unbleached flour
– 310 ml of milk
– 2 eggs
– 30mg of sugar
– 1 pinch of salt
– Butter
