Hosted by The Korean Culture and Information Service, the Embassy of the Republic of Korea, and the Korean Cultural Centre Canada in celebration of the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between our two countries, the nine male dancers of Modern Table and three traditional musicians will take to the stage at the National Art Centre to present Velocity, or ‘Sok-do’ in Korean.

Choreographed by Kim Jae-duk, famously a member of one of the original K-pop boy bands credited with launching the boy band phenom, Velocity is an interpretation of various motions and speeds with the human body. The performance will combine traditional Korean dance with contemporary movement.

Modern Table was founded in 2007 by Kim Jae-duk as a project-based group. Since then, the group has found success on international and domestic stages. The company strives to provide synesthetic experiences and inspirational impressions to the audience, including the composition of works that break the boundaries between the stage and the audience.

People fear the change in velocity as it increases and find boredom as it decreases or stays the same. The performance will express three different motions of ‘Velocity’ through movements of the body, featuring emphasized lines that are dynamic and curvy, unique to Modern Table’s movement vocabulary. The bold body movements are created through the interaction with the air, and the dynamism occurs through changes in rhythm. This characteristic allows the audience to immerse and feel the change in velocity.

As a special feature, the performance is also weaved together by the rhythmic sounds of the Ajaeng, a seven-stringed Korean traditional instrument used in court music.

Before coming to Ottawa, Modern Table will perform on Vancouver Island, their first time in Canada.
