The Ottawa Clay Festival returns this spring with a Throwdown, Exhibition, pottery demonstration, Children’s Clay Area and the much-loved Spring Sale. Join Ottawa’s largest gathering of potters from Friday, May 3rd, to Sunday, May 5th, 2024, at the Horticulture Building at Lansdowne Park. This three-day event is open to the public and celebrates craftsmanship and creativity. The event offers the opportunity to learn about all aspects of one of the world’s oldest art forms and is a wonderful family event.
The festival kicks off on the afternoon of Friday, May 3rd, at 3 p.m. with the opening of the Guild’s Spring Pottery Sale. More than 30 of Ottawa’s best potters will showcase their beautiful handcrafted ceramics, offering the public a chance to purchase functional, sculptural, and decorative pieces.
The Ottawa Guild of Potters (OGP), which hosts the festival, comprises a diverse community of local artisans from various cultures and backgrounds. OGP celebrated its 50th Anniversary in 2023 and is an important part of Ottawa’s thriving pottery scene. The Ottawa Clay Festival provides visitors with an engaging and fun pottery experience.
One of the highlights of the festival is the Annual Juried Exhibition. Guild members submit their ceramic pieces, which will be judged this year by award-winning ceramic artist Lesley McInally. Awards, including Best in Show, Best for Use, and Best Sculptural Work, will be presented during the Exhibition opening ceremonies on Friday evening, from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m.. Visitors also have the opportunity to vote for their favourite entry.
Saturday features the 3rd Ottawa Pottery Throwdown, where talented potters compete in head-to-head pottery challenges. The public is welcome to view the competition starting at 1 p.m., which promises to be exciting and showcase the skill and creativity of the participating artists.
Throughout the weekend, the Festival offers a range of family-friendly and interactive events to engage attendees of all ages, including opportunities to watch different potters demonstrating their skills, either hand building or wheel throwing. The Children’s Clay Area will allow kids to explore their creativity and have fun getting their hands dirty.
The Mug Wall will be a great opportunity for visitors to find their next favourite mug. It will showcase a variety of unique designs crafted by local artisans. Live music will also be ongoing throughout the weekend, enhancing the festive atmosphere while adding to the overall enjoyment and experience.
