Magical Terroir of Alsace: Exploring Three Opulent White Wines That Showcase the Region’s Unique Soils

The iconic white wines of Alsace are famous for their pure aromas, freshness and their ability to express the varied terroirs of the Alsatian region. Here we look at three opulent and fruity white wines, including a sparkling Crémant d’Alsace. The region is geologically fragmented and minerally rich, with thirteen distinct soil types. This variety of soils offers winemakers the opportunity to craft unique wines specifically to the terroir of particular vineyard plots.

The Alsatian vineyards follow the curves of the Vosges Mountains, which protect the vines from weather extremes, while offering sufficient sunlight and cool nights in the perfect balance to enhance vine development.

KOENIG BRUT CRÉMANT D’ALSACE
Alsace, France

Koenig has the distinction of being the first kosher wine cellar in France. The philosophy at Koenig is that wine is made in the vineyard, not in the cellar.  Located on the eastern slopes of the Vosges mountains, Koenig practices responsible viticulture with low yields. Yields are controlled in order to concentrate aromas and best express the potential of each plot. The vines are meticulously cared for throughout the growing cycle to optimize the growth of the highest quality grapes, and the integrity of the grapes is respected with manual harvest. In the cellar, each stage, from receiving the grapes to bottling, carefully minimizes handling of the wine to preserve its purity.

This is a beautiful sparkling wine crafted from 100% Pinot Blanc grapes. Like Champagne, it is made with a second fermentation in the bottle. You will find citrus and brioche aromas, followed by a palate with delicate notes of lemon, grapefruit, green apple, white florals, marzipan and rich buttery brioche, with an intense, delicate mousse. This delightful sparkler makes a lovely aperitif or it can accompany cocktails and dessert.
