‘Mrs. Doubtfire’ Delivers Heart and Hilarity at the NAC
Broadway Across Canada brings a delightful dose of comedy and heart to the National Arts Centre this week with the musical Mrs. Doubtfire, running through November 9.
Based on the beloved 1993 film, this stage adaptation captures the spirit of the original while adding its own theatrical flair.
At the centre of the story is Daniel Hillard, a gifted voice actor with a knack for humour and a heart full of love for his children. Unfortunately, his playful nature has worn thin with his wife, Miranda, who—tired of his immaturity—files for divorce and wins custody of their three kids. Daniel is devastated. Weekly visits aren’t enough, and Miranda isn’t open to renegotiating.
When Miranda begins searching for a nanny, Daniel hatches a bold plan: he disguises himself as a charming Scottish woman named Mrs. Doubtfire and lands the job. Under this clever persona, he reconnects with his children in ways he never could before—though they remain unaware of his true identity.

Of course, any adaptation of Mrs. Doubtfire carries the legacy of Robin Williams, whose iconic performance in the film earned him a Golden Globe and a permanent place in pop culture history. Stepping into such a towering role is no small feat, but Craig Allen Smith rises to the occasion with charisma and confidence. Rather than imitating Williams, Smith brings his own theatrical energy to the role, delivering sharp comedic timing and commanding the stage with ease.
Melissa Campbell shines as Miranda, her powerful vocals filling Southam Hall and her performance adding emotional depth to the story. The chemistry between the cast members is palpable, and their collective talent makes for a cohesive and compelling production.
While the musical numbers may not linger in your head long after the curtain falls—music taste is subjective, after all—the overall experience is thoroughly enjoyable.
The show is family-friendly, with plenty of children in the audience, and its blend of humour, heart, and theatrical magic makes it a perfect outing for all ages.
Mrs. Doubtfire is playing at the NAC until November 9. Don’t miss your chance to see this heartwarming comedy come to life on stage.
Tickets start at $83 and can be purchased from Ticketmaster or by calling the National Arts Centre box office at 1-844-985-2787 (ARTS)
