Staying on Track With Your New Year’s Resolutions

Believe it or not, we are already two weeks into 2018! Already feeling a bit discouraged or falling off track with the resolutions you set for yourself? No worries! Here are some ways you can stay motivated and positive in reaching your goals.

Break Up Goals into Smaller Sub-Goals

Setting a big goal like wanting to lose 20 pounds or wanting to go vegetarian can be daunting, so to help you achieve your goals, break them down into smaller, more achievable ones. For example, instead of rushing to lose 20 pounds as quickly as possible, focus on a couple of pounds a month. This will eventually accumulate to your desired goal by the end of the year. Remember, it’s not about how fast you achieve your goals–focus on getting to them in a healthy and practical way that doesn’t stress you out or make you miserable.

Keep a Written Record

The best way to keep track of your goals, and to better hold yourself accountable, is to keep a written record of them. Not only should you list your resolutions, but also keep track of your achievements, any set backs and things you want to improve. You can do this in the form of a personal journal, diary or, if you want to share your journey, through a blog! Resolutions and goals are sometimes personal, but blogging is a great way to form community and connect with others striving for the same things.

Build Up a Reliable Support System

It is so important to surround yourself with supportive family and friends. Don’t be afraid to let go of people who are putting you down or making you doubt yourself and your ability to accomplish your resolutions. Build up networks of people with similar goals so that you can motivate each other. If you’re looking to launch a blog this year, join a blogger community where you can share ideas and get inspiration. If you’re trying to get more active, ask one of your friends who is also trying to up their fitness this year to be your yoga or gym buddy. Having that sense of community will make you feel less alone and push you harder.

Reward Yourself

Hype yourself up and reward yourself along the way! Every time you achieve one of your goals, celebrate it! The rewards don't have to be extravagant, just little things that make you feel good and further motivate you to keep up the good work. This can be as simple as treating yourself to your favourite meal, pampering yourself or maybe splurging a bit on something you’ve had your eyes on at your favourite store.

Setbacks = Welcomed Challenges

Setbacks are inevitable. There are going to be bumps in the road along the way, but instead of seeing these as blows, accept them as challenges and push even harder! Some things are simply out of your control– if you happen to get sick and have to miss a few days at the gym or you couldn’t refuse that piece of bacon at brunch last weekend, don’t beat yourself up over it. You might just have to tweak your routine a bit or adjust your goals slightly and that is totally fine. The year has only just begun and there is so much positivity on the way and you can do it!
