Taste the Essence of the Mountains in Italy’s Wines of Alto Adige

The “Mountain Wines” of Alto Adige are produced in an alpine terroir, which has developed over millions of years of activity from glaciers, volcanoes and streams. This region is located in the northernmost tip of Italy, nestled in the beautiful Dolomites, a mountain range bordering Austria and Switzerland.

The resulting multifaceted terroir boasts a variety of soil types, from fertile clay found in the valley floors, to mineral-rich soil on the steep slopes. The terraced vineyards climb slopes of up to 1000 metres and require meticulous manual work, but the grapes that are produced here thrive in the combination of Mediterranean sunlight and dry mountain air.

I recently had the opportunity to taste two beautiful wines from this region, and I want to share my impressions with you. They are both currently available at the LCBO. Having visited the Alto Adige area, I can assure you that it is not only breathtakingly beautiful, but there are many opportunities for wine tourism. The region is also located a short distance from Verona, which also offers countless opportunities for wine tourism.

Cantina Tiefenbrunner Pinot Grigio 2024
Alto Adige DOC, Italy

The Tiefenbrunner Estate Winery in Niclara is among the oldest in Alto Adige. The delicate aromas of this wine evoke a walk in the fresh mountain air, offering aromas of white florals with herbal touches. The palate is crisp and zesty, gently reminiscent of tart apples and pears, with citrus and mineral notes. At 12.5% alcohol by volume, this Pinot Grigio has more heft and a richer mouthfeel than usual. Enjoy it with fish and seafood or a vegetable pasta. As an aperitif, it makes a mouthwatering pairing with melon, Speck ham and Roquefort cheese.

Extra Dry • 12.5% • LCBO Vintages Essentials #474742 • on sale for $19.95 until March 29th, then $21.95

Erste + Neue Pinot Bianco 2024
Alto Adige DOC, Italy

This bright and vivacious Pinot Bianco shows elegant floral and mineral fragrances, with Granny Smith apples and ripe peach aromas too. It was crafted from hand-picked grapes, which enhances the fruit expression. The vineyards are located on slopes between 450 and 600 metres above sea level. The predominant flavours on the lively palate are apple and peach, with slight citrus. It’s a well-balanced and mouthwatering wine that has excellent structure and bright acidity. It works beautifully with delicate sushi rolls or with grilled garlicy shrimp.

Dry 13% • LCBO Vintages #44730 • $24.95
