The DIY Backsplash

There are several affordable ways you can incorporate some design wow into your interior space. One of those ways is with the kitchen backsplash. Not only will this protect your walls and add visual appeal, but it will also add architectural depth to the space. I still remember the completion of my very first DIY kitchen backsplash, many moons ago while living in my first apartment and attending university. Needless to say, the budget was the determining factor in this DesignerDIY project. As such, I created a ‘tile-like’backsplash by applying a faux-finish using various painting techniques that ended up looking like tile (from afar that is).  However, at the time, the aesthetic illusion of an intricate tile backsplash was more than satisfactory.

Fast forward years later and just like my culinary palette, my DesignerDIY expectations have matured. However, that does not mean to shy away from the do-it-yourself backsplash, just perhaps incorporate some actual tile this time.

Tips for a Foolproof DIY Backsplash:

  1. Ensure your surface is clean, level and free from ‘structural wows’—I’ve come to understand this is a common tradesman term for uneven or warped surfaces.
  2. Even though there are several products available, use a pre-mixed adhesive to eliminate the mad scientist mixing factor and ensure adhesion.
  3. Determine your focal point and ensure your selected tiles complement the existing decor. For example if you already have a very detailed countertop or cabinetry, you may wish to select a simple tile for your backsplash. In this case Emerald Tile & Marble’s Caledonia Granite was selected as the star of the show!
  4. Make sure you have the proper tools! Along with your selected tile, adhesive and grout, you will need a notched trowel, tile spacers, sponge, bucket, tape measure, level, straight edge, tile cuter and utility knife.
  5. Select a tile that corresponds with your skill set. If you are a novice DIYer, you will want a tile that involves minimal effort on the strategic placement and modification front. 3 x 6 subway tiles are the perfect trendy choice for the novice backsplasher!

TRENDING TIPS:

When taking on a DIY project, the single most important factor is to be cognizant of your capabilities! It is very easy to get in over your head with DIYs, so I suggest using a subway tile for a backsplash. If you are new to tiling, you don’t have to worry about intricate patterns and you can really create a timeless look using either a brick stack, herringbone or straight set patterns depending on your design preference. Or incorporate a row of mosaic tiles amidst the subway classics to really sport your individuality.
