In response to the worldwide popularity of Squid Game, the Korean Cultural Centre Canada (KCC) is pleased to invite you to the screenings of The Face Reader (2013) and New World (2013), two films that feature the actor Lee Jung-jae, or Kihun from Squid Game.
On November 24, 2021, the KCC is screening The Face Reader. Directed by Han Jae-rim, the movie tells the story of Nae-gyeong (Song Kang-ho), the most skillful face reader in the Joseon dynasty, who finds himself involved in a power struggle between Grand Prince Suyang (Lee Jung-jae) and a high-ranking loyalist to King Munjong. The role of Grand Prince Suyang is considered one of the most charismatic and dominant characters in that Lee has played to date, a big contrast from his role as Kihun in Squid game.
On November 26, 2021 catch director Park Hoon-jung’s unique Korean-noir thriller, New World. In the film, Lee Jung-jae plays Lee Ja-Sung, an undercover police officer working for South Korea’s largest corporate crime syndicate. Lee delivers a powerful and intense performance, depicting Ja-sung’s struggle between a corrupt police organisation and royal gangsters.
If you are unable to take in either of the in-person films, catch the online screening of Escape from Mogadishu. From November 24th to 30th the KCC will hosting online screenings of director by Ryoo Seung-wan’s multi-award winning film.
Based on a true story, the film is set during the Somali Civil War and depicts the details of a perilous escape attempt made by North and South Korean embassy workers stranded during the conflict. A 2021 box office hit, Escape from Mogadishu is nominated at the upcoming 42nd Blue Dragon Film Awards in ten categories and has already won four awards at the 41st Korean Association of Film Critics Awards, while also garnering rave reviews from both critics and the audience.
