Echoes of the Motherland is an evening of African culture and heritage, the perfect way to wrap up Black History Month celebrations by exploring several aspects of life in the world’s most ecologically and ethnically diverse continent.

Traditional attire

The traditional attire celebration is a unique experience of style and cultural diversity. Although not compulsory, participants are encouraged to celebrate their own authentic identity by wearing ethnic garments.

Impressive art

Charifa Labarang has curated a collection of captivating visuals and thought-provoking themes; the “Hues of Contamination” Art Gallery will explore the urgent need for sustainable practices in the face of fast fashion’s impact on our planet. Viewers will witness the consequences of consumerism and environmental destruction portrayed in every brushstroke.

Live music

Feel the rhythm of the Motherland come alive at the musical showcase featuring DJ Avenue, Siaka Diabate Band, Adebayo Jacobs, and Burning Moon. From soulful melodies to electrifying tunes, each performance promises to transport you on a musical journey that will stir your soul and leave you craving more.

Dance performance

The highlight of the evening is the Cultural Showcase by the Ishaka Cultural Group. Well-known in the African diaspora, the group was founded with a mission to preserve Burundi’s rich cultural heritage. This dynamic troupe will mesmerize you with their traditional dances and songs, transporting you to their ancestral East African homeland. With authentic costumes and unmatched energy, you won’t believe the raw talent before your eyes.

Culinary voyage

Make sure to arrive with an empty stomach to indulge your appetite in an ethnic culinary journey through Africa’s vast landscape of food traditions. From tantalizing aromas to mouthwatering flavours, Sweet and Crust will present dishes honouring African cuisine’s rich heritage and telling stories of tradition and culinary artistry.
