The Korean Cultural Centre Canada is hosting online screenings of ‘YOUN Yuh-jung’ films

The Korean Cultural Centre (KCC) Canada is hosting a virtual screening of two films by director KIM Cho-hee, “Ladies of the Forest (2016)” and “Lucky Chan-sil (2019),” in the hopes that the two works by Korea’s leading independent film director will uplift Canadians who are weary due to Covid-19.

Heartwarming and Cheerful Depiction of Despair

The first screening is of the indie short film, "Ladies of the Forest". KIM has taken a traditional Korean folktale ,“The Fairy and The Lumberjack”, and cheerfully twisted it. It is the story of a 70-year-old bachelorette, Soon-shim (YOUN Yuh-jung), who comes from a different planet to find love.

The second offering is KIM’s first feature film, “Lucky Chan-sil”, that depicts the struggles of former film producer Chan-Sil (KANG Mal-geum) who finds herself unemployed and penniless after the sudden death of the director who she has worked with for a long time. YOUN Yuh-jung stars in the film at KANG’s new landlady.

Both of the movies received high praise from critics and the general public. “Lucky Chan-sil” has won several awards, including three awards at the Busan International Film Festival and many others at various film festivals. In 2020, Kim was nominated as the 'Best Discovery’ by film industry experts.

Special Event with Director KIM Cho-Hee

On August 25, 2021 at 8 p.m., the KCC is hosting a virtual Directors Talk with KIM Cho-Hee — a unique opportunity for the general public!

KIM met the legendary multi-award-winning YOUN Yuh-jung during her numerous years in the film industry as an actress and producer where he developed a close relationship with her—even working as her personal Busan accent tutor. When he offered YOUN the leading role in the indie film, the actress agreed without a second thought. Look forward to hearing details of KIM’s work, stories from behind the scenes, and more during the Directors Talk.
