What Really Happens When We Step Outside Our Comfort Zone — Especially with Food

Recently, I had the privilege of speaking at a Vida Mexico conference in honour of International Women’s Day. Although I speak Spanish, it was my first time leading a full workshop in the language — and let’s just say it was both exhilarating and deeply uncomfortable.

Standing before the audience, searching for the right words, I felt a mix of vulnerability and excitement. It reminded me of what happens when we step into unfamiliar territory. Growth always asks something of us — courage, humility, and a willingness to feel uncomfortable along the way.

As a nutrition professional, this experience mirrored what I see so often with my clients: the hesitation that comes with trying something new, especially with food. Changing what and how we eat can feel like losing a part of ourselves, because food is never just about sustenance. It’s about identity, memory, and belonging.

The recipes passed down through generations are love stories written in flavour. They carry the rhythm of our families, the scent of our childhood kitchens, and the comfort of familiarity.

Yet, tasting something new or cooking from a different culture opens a window to a broader world. A bowl of pho or a plate of tamales isn’t simply a meal; it’s an invitation to understand someone else’s traditions, climate, and history. When we share or explore these foods, we practice empathy; we connect through the universal language of nourishment.

True nourishment, after all, honours both body and culture. It respects the deep emotional ties between people and their food, while gently encouraging new experiences that expand how we see ourselves and others.

For me, speaking in Spanish wasn’t just a linguistic stretch — it was a reminder that growth, like food, is most satisfying when shared across cultures, stories, and tables.
