Green is GOLD and ETHICS VIOLATIONS & LEGAL BREACHES by Royal Lepage Team Realty Carling Avenue Office

Welcome to the first of our three-part series on HOMES. In this issue, we feature several Ottawa homeowners and builders who are saving money and helping the environment by going green. We also profile a company called TAG- The Anything Guys – an innovative Ottawa based company of young entrepreneurs who promise to “do anything to make your life easier.”

In July, the second part of our Homes series will publish an in-depth story on Royal Lepage Canada and examine three Royal Lepage Ottawa agents with Royal Lepage Team Realty Carling Avenue office (Mary and David Lindsay, and Kelly Williams) cited for numerous ethics violations by The Real Estate Council of Ontario (RECO). Three Ontario Appeals Court Tribunal judges found against Williams and the Lindsays for a fiduciary breach of duty to their clients. The story focuses on Phil Souper, the CEO of Royal Lepage and other executives at Royal Lepage and what they did when informed of all these ethical lapses in the Royal Lepage Team Realty Carling Avenue office (hint: nothing). In September we provide all the latest trends and tips in home renovations and home decorating.

As a tribute to Canada’s military, we have a great story celebrating the Centennial of Flight and, juxtaposed with our series on homes, we explore homelessness in the capital. Finally, don’t forget to read our Gallery feature on the Daniel Richards Gallery. Richards is an exceptionally gifted artist and continues with his art after a thirty-year career working for the National Gallery.

The economy dominates political discourse these days, but there is another issue on the minds of Canadians and it is dear to our hearts: health care. In a recent Ipsos Reid/Dominion Institute poll (released July 1, 2008) our health care system made the list of top five defining features of all things Canadian by those polled. While we may cherish it and love it, how much do we actually know about it? Here’s a basic health care 101.

What is it? How much does it cost? Who pays for it?

There are five overriding principles that govern health care in Canada — comprehensiveness, universality, portability, accessibility and public administration — that are provided in the federal government’s Canada Health Act. The policy is set and the system partially funded by the feds but everything is run by the provinces, who also finance a good portion of it.

Although the final tally is not yet in, health expenditures in total in Canada were expected to reach $171.9 billion in 2008 — or 10.7% of the gross domestic product (GDP), the highest share ever recorded. In fact, year after year, health care expenditures increase faster than population or inflation rates.
