The Super Ex was once again home to Organ Donor Awareness Day on August 23rd this year. Trillium Gift of Life Network, The Kidney Foundation of Canada, The Canadian Liver Foundation, CNIB and Canadian Blood Service came together with the Super Ex to form their annual Living Green Ribbon to raise awareness on organ and tissue donation—a cause to which President of the Super Ex, Lyn Presley, holds very near to her heart. Her husband and former Super Ex President David Presley was on his death bed in the fall of 2002 when he suffered from a life threatening kidney failure. If it weren’t for the generous donation of a working kidney, David wouldn’t be with us right now. Truth of the matter is, only 17% of those eligible for donation have registered their consent to be donors. Each year, thousands of Ontarians are given a second chance to live by receiving the gift of life—but 17% isn’t enough to fulfill the demand. The waiting list is long, and many lives are lost because suitable...

Currently completing her Bachelor of Commerce at the University of Ottawa, she hopes to pursue a career in agriculture. As the seventh generation being raised on her family dairy farm, she has a natural passion to promote agricultural awareness. Avaleigh is genuinely enjoying her role and is privileged to be a part of this tradition. She feels that the program enriches young women's lives through its opportunities. During her year as Queen, she has participated in community events such as Food Aid and finds her involvement rewarding. The challenge of plowing using traditional methods also gives an appreciation of our grandparent's endeavours. "Our plowmen's association is as rich in history as the soil of our beautiful county," she states. The Ottawa-Carleton Plowing Match will be held August 27th and 28th at Smithdale Farm, Stittsville. India's diverse customs, flavours and personalities came together and were at their best to celebrate their rich, ancient culture. An estimated 1,100 attended the nostalgic event, organized by various Indo-Canadian community groups featuring traditional food, dancing, music, henna and a talent show. People from the various Indian communities had a chance to interact with one another. The day couldn’t have got better than this as Gujarati music played over the loudspeakers as dozens of dancers performed the Dandiya Raas -- a traditional east-Indian dance, Mayor and his wife joined with the tune. People were reveling in the fine cuisine prepared by community volunteers, Kids were having a blast enjoying the water park and the mazes which was available in the farm. It was clearly a day to relax and celebrate with friends...

SUMMER Cover, the ’A-Team‘ - Our cover story features profiles of five prominent Canadian journalists who have significant influence regarding how Canadians view politics and our politicians. CBC’s Power & Politics host Evan Solomon, CBC’s The House, host Kathleen Petty CTV’s Power Play host Tom Clark, CPAC’s Primetime Politics host Peter Van Dusen, and the Toronto Star’s Parliamentary Correspondent Tonda MacCharles report on the top political stories of the day and more often than not are the national media personalities who hold public officials accountable for their actions. The Greens Need to Move to the Centre The Liberal Party of Canada under Michael Ignatieff is rudderless. No surprise really. Many Liberals feel they have not abandoned the Liberal Party, but rather, it has abandoned them. Most Canadians live in the centre politically-speaking. They are somewhat fiscally conservative yet progressive on social issues. They do not vote for or believe in the politics...

This issue begins an eight part series on Public Servants in Canada and will include profiles on some of the exceptional people who work to deliver a myriad of important services to Canadians. The best word to describe the federal Conservative government’s decision to slay the deficit by targeting Canada’s public servants by cutting jobs, salaries and pensions in the coming year is nasty. The looming cuts are said to be more severe than those implemented by Paul Martin in 1995 under former Prime Minister, Jean Chrétien. The OECD reports that Canada is coming out of the current recession in a stronger fiscal position than any other G-20 country. Our debt and deficit are low and manageable when compared to those of the United States and all European countries. The Harper and McGuinty governments correctly initiated a stimulus package last year, spending billions of dollars...
Read More...Public Service Public servants get slagged a lot these days. However, as the rumours continue to spread about deep cuts to the salaries and pensions of our government workers, it is important to remember the contributions they make each and every day to deliver a myriad of important services to Canadians from coast to coast. In the upcoming program review, the Treasury Board should be careful not to throw the baby out with the bath water as it looks for efficiencies and savings in federal spending. It is true that public servants do not generate income. That is not their role. Their role is service delivery. Public servants in Canada contribute greatly to the economy by spending the salaries they earn in the communities in which they work and by paying taxes from those salaries and pensions back to government. Rather than penalize Canada’s public servants, the government should look at effective ways to reduce waste in government operations and provide more cost efficient delivery of...

"Stupid is as Stupid Does" ~ Forrest Gump .... Or, “The Past lies upon the Present like a giant's dead body”. ~Nathaniel Hawthorne... It’s funny to see all the media jumping on the Jacques Martin bandwagon. “He is brilliant”, they say. “To witness how his coaching has changed and adapted for the new era is remarkable”, I’ve heard numerous times. Yeah, Jacques Martin has the Canadiens playing tight, disciplined hockey with a reliance on opportunistic counterattacks for offence. When the Habs do get it deep they execute an up-tempo, remorseless cycle that has lead to frequent quality scoring chances. So, what’s new? That was the same formula used by the Senators when Martin was coaching them. Year in and year out, under Martin, the Senators were one of the top defensive teams while finishing consistently near the top in goals scored. The Senators were extremely disciplined and moved the puck so rapidly out of their own end they were always a step ahead of the other...

To be fair, our boys looked awesome from that point on. Even so, the Americans were in control from the opening faceoff. The U.S. played an excellent up-tempo game with some jam and a sense of urgency. They attacked, took risks and played with a kind of “damn your eyes” attitude the rest of the world always attributed to Canadian hockey players. It is sickening to hear Canadian commentators hide behind the superlative goaltending of Ryan Miller. The U.S. earned this victory and won as a team. Canada did not look like a team. I must admit, I was concerned in the days leading up to the game when Coach Mike Babcock said the Canadians had been playing without passion. Are you kidding me? This is not the NHL All-Star Game. This is the Olympics..., the biggest stage in the world. Show your heart! Rise to...
